The idea of developing a low-cost "ultralight" aeroplane using small engines came from British and French gliding enthusiasts in 1922. The concept virtually vanished until a few hang-glider pilots began experimenting with tiny engines they termed "glide extenders" during the late 1960s.
John K. Moody was the first to publicize their efforts. In 1975, K Moody put a 12.5 horsepower engine on his Icarus II hang glider, which had previously been powered by an 8.75-horsepower motor. Moody started the modern ultralight movement in America in August 1978, when he piloted level takeoffs and landings from level ground at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s fly-in convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Under Part 103 of the Federal Aviation Administration's regulations, ultralights are defined by their limits. If you exceed any of these restrictions, you're flying an unlicensed aircraft: one passenger, five gallons of gas, an empty weight of 254 pounds with a maximum speed of 63 mph, and a power-off stall speed of 27 mph or less. Because ultralight air-framed gliders are quite inexpensive, and pilots don't need a medical certificate or an FAA license to fly them, the hobby has exploded. Keep within the guidelines and stick to a list of no flying from sunset to sunrise, overcrowded areas or gatherings, or in regulated airspace, and the penalty is little if any FAA regulation is violated to the minimum.
Although the 1903 Wright Flyer does not fulfil the FAA's weight restriction, it may be considered the first ultralight in the Museum's collection. Though contemporary ultralights are easier to manage than the 1903 airplane, they provide a pilot with a similar sensation in the air: Open to the elements, devoid of structure, and flying low and slow, ultralight recapture the experience of the first airplane flights.
