Nagarjun Jamacho Gompa Hiking is a short and sweet hiking trail just 3 km far from the tourist hub of Kathmandu, Thamel. The area is now a part of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park which was known as Nagarjun forest.  The enticing atmosphere of Jamacho Gompa lures a lot of visitors from neighbouring Kathmandu valley. Protected by the Nepalese Army, the woods in the wilderness of Jamacho is pristine, adventurous and fascinating as it offers the spectacular views of the Himalayas, Kathmandu valley and a wide array of flora and fauna.

Hiking to Jamacho offers the snow capped views of the Himalayan peaks such as Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Jugal, Dorje Lakpa, and Langtang Himal. From some parts, you can also see the world-renowned eight-thousander and the top of the world- Mount Everest.

How to get Jamacho Gumba?

Jamacho Gompa is an amazing destination near Kathmandu valley in the serene settlement of Nagarjuna Hill. Getting to the Jamacho Gompa is easy and do not require extensive hiking supplies. The route to Nagarjun is Kathmandu-Machhapokhari- Fulbari Gate-Jamacho Peak- Fulbari Gate-Kathmandu.

It takes around half an hour of drive from central Kathmandu to reach Fulbari gate via drive. Fulbari gate is also known as the gateway to Nagarjuna hill. The peaceful surroundings of Nagarjuna hill, birds chirping, fluttering prayer flags and caves and stupas in the hill are captivating.

The spectacular views of the Himalayas including some parts of Annapurna and Everest range, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal stretched in a panorama is very astounding. The top of the hill also offers the views of Kathmandu valley and neighbouring mountain villages.

How difficult is Jamacho hiking?

Nagarjun Jamacho Gompa is easy trekking in the outskirts of Kathmandu valley. Because of easy accessibility and its proximity to the capital Kathmandu valley, it is one of the easiest and a single day hike near Kathmandu valley. Also, since the elevation is 2128 m, it is easier in terms of the altitude as well.

Best Season to Visit

Hiking in the outskirts of Kathmandu valley is a year-round activity. However, the monsoon season is not so favourable because of the slippery trail and unexpected climate conditions. The spring season, summer season, winter season and autumn season are favourable to hike Jamacho Gompa. 

During the spring season, the lush greenery amid the mountains is very astonishing and offers an amazing experience to the visitors. Summer season is quite beautiful, the temperature is not so hot and does not exceed more than 30 degrees in usual times. Autumn is the best time to hike in terms of climate and temperature.

While visiting Jamacho Gompa, if you are a novice hiker, you must know certain things about hiking. 

  • Do not enter Gompa with the shoes on. 

  • If there is a ‘no photography’ sign on the premises, do not click photos. 

  • Jamacho Gompa lies in the National Park area, so while hiking here do not make noise and do not litter. 

  • Don’t do any activity that might hamper the flora and fauna in the national park. 

  • Always wear comfortable clothes and shoes while hiking in the mountains.
