Langtang National Park (or Lamtang National Park) offers some of the best trekking destinations after the Sagarmatha/Everest and Annapurna regions

From learning about Tibetan Buddhism to visiting sacred lakes, this region of Nepal has everything in the books a trekker could wish for. It holds a rich history, culture, customs, and traditions and is also the second-oldest national park in the country.

Moreover, this region is home to both the Jugal and Langtang mountain ranges. The prominent ones are Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), Langtang Ri (7,205 m), Naya Khanga or Naya Kanga (5,863 m), Yala Peak (5,520 m), Yubra Himal (6,048 m), Ganchenpo/Fluted Peak (6,378 m), Langshisa Ri (6,412 m), Dorje Lhakpa (6,966 m), Madiya Peak (6,799 m), Phurbi Chyachu (6,631 m), Yangri or Jugal Peak (6,535 m), etc.

While the main ethnic group living in Langtang Valley is the Tamang community, you’ll also find Bhotia, Yolmo, Brahmin, Chhetri and Gurung communities living across the region. Their main sources of living are agriculture, animal husbandry, business, and tourism.

One of the most iconic products here is Yak Cheese. And the perk of booking tours with Altitude Himalaya is that we will take you to either the Organic Yak Cheese Production Centre in Kyanjin Village of Langtang Valley Trek or Chandanbari of Gosaikunda Trek.

This region is filled with diverse forests of sal, chir pine, rhododendron, Nepalese alder, silver fir, hemlock, larch, birch, silver fir, sorbus microphyla, and bamboo trees.

And if you’re lucky enough, Langtang can provide you with the opportunity to spot various wildlife, including red pandas, snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, Himalayan tahrs, musk deer, wild dogs, ghorals, serows, Impeyan pheasants, and others.

Top Treks to Do in the Langtang Region

The Langtang region of Nepal is home to high-altitude viewpoints, holy lakes, and beautiful valleys. Just visiting Langtang Valley alone won’t help you grasp the full essence of the entire national park, for sure.

For that reason, our team at Altitude Himalaya has carefully selected the best treks you can do in this region. From Kyanjin Gompa to Ama Yangri, the mother protector of Hyolmo Valley, our trekking packages cover everything in the Langtang region.

Here’s a quick glimpse:

  • The Classic Langtang Valley Trek: One of the best panoramic trekking destinations of moderate difficulty, which is perfect for beginners. It comes with surreal mountain views, Tibetan communities, and ancient monasteries.
  • Gosaikunda Lake: A sacred lake in the Langtang region dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is believed to have thrown his trident into the mountains, forming the lake in order to drink water to cool his burning throat after Samudra Manthan.
  • Panch Pokhari: The combination of five ponds makes this a great monsoon destination, as the trail offers blooming wildflowers. It’s an absolute favorite among locals here in Nepal.
  • Helambu Circuit: An altitude-friendly trek focused more on the cultural aspects that give you a glimpse into the Hyolmo/Yolmo community. You start from Sundarijal, Kathmandu, and end in Melamchi, Sindhupalchok. The highlight is the vantage point of Ama Yangri, where you get to enjoy the panoramic view of the distant mountains.

People and Culture in the Langtang Region

When you travel to Langtang National Park and the surrounding region, you’re likely going to meet mostly Tamang, Bhotia, and Yolmo people. The people here follow Tibetan Buddhism, primarily the Bon doctrine.

The major festival celebrated here is the Tarna Festival, which takes place every year on Bhadra Purnima. It commemorates the successful completion of Guru Rinpoche's 600-year-old meditation in one of the caves in Upper Langtang.

Besides this, festivals such as Gyalpo Lhosar, Mani Rimdu, Dhukpu Cheju (archery festival), Buddha Jayanti, Dumje or Dumji, Dawa Dangpo Tsech, Dashain, and Tihar are also celebrated here.

One essential thing we want to point out is that people in the Langtang region were greatly affected by the 2015 Nepal Earthquake. From homes being damaged to the loss of loved ones, it was a devastating period.

Yet, you’ll find that the people of Langtang remain calm and welcoming. When here, don’t forget to express your sympathy and help them out as much as you can. Our entire team at Altitude Himalaya would remain grateful to you!

From hospitality to your stays, the people in Langtang ensure that it will be the absolute best at the heart of the Himalayas. You’ll mostly stay in local teahouses and lodges and try Nepalese food like Dal Bhat, along with options to pick Tibetan and Western food too.

Best Time to Do Treks in Langtang

Unlike other trekking regions of Nepal, Langtang National Park is ideal in every season. However, it’s essential that you choose the right destination at the right season.

It’s true that the best time to visit most of Nepal’s tourist destinations is during the Spring and Autumn seasons. But that’s not necessarily the case with the Langtang region. Here’s a table to prove this point:

Season

Months

Highlight

Basanta (Spring)

Mid-March to Early May

Blooming rhododendrons, clear (slightly unpredictable) weather, pleasant temperatures, stunning mountain views, moderately crowded trails

Grishma (Summer / Pre-Monsoon)

Mid-May to June

Fewer trekkers, decent high-altitude temperatures, and good mountain views if weather remains clear

Barsha (Monsoon)

July to Mid-September

Lush greenery and dramatic waterfalls, but heavy rainfall, leeches, muddy trails, and limited mountain views

Sharad (Autumn)

Late September to Mid-November

Best overall season: stable weather, clear mountain views, ideal temperatures, cultural experiences, busiest and slightly expensive

Hemanta (Winter)

Late November to Mid-January

Cold temperatures, clear morning views, great for winter scenery lovers

Sishir (Late Winter)

Late January to Early March

Dry conditions with lingering snowfall, more challenging trails, ideal for adventure seekers
